Chick Flick Must See ~ 'The Help'

The Help is a 2009 novel by American author Kathryn Stockett. The story is about African American maids working in white households in Jackson, Mississippi during the early 1960s.

The novel is told from the point of view of three narrators: Aibileen Clark, a middle-aged African-American maid who has spent her life raising white children, and who has recently lost her only son; Minny Jackson, an African-American maid whose back-talk towards her employers results in her having to frequently change jobs, exacerbating her desperate need for work as well as her family's struggle with money; and Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan, a young white woman and recent college graduate who, after moving back home, discovers that a maid that helped raise her since childhood has abruptly disappeared and her attempts to find her have come to naught. The stories of the three women intertwine to explain how life in Jackson, Mississippi revolves around "the help", with complex relations of power, money, emotion, and intimacy tying together the white and black families of Jackson.

A USA Today article called it one of 2009's "summer sleeper hits". An early review in The New York Times notes Stockett's "affection and intimacy buried beneath even the most seemingly impersonal household connections" and says the book is a "button-pushing, soon to be wildly popular novel". The Atlanta Journal-Constitution said of the book, "This heartbreaking story is a stunning debut from a gifted talent".

The novel is Stockett's first. It took her five years to complete the book, which was rejected by 60 literary agents before agent Susan Ramer agreed to represent Stockett. The Help has since been published in 35 countries and three languages.  As of August 2011, it has sold five million copies and has spent more than a 100 weeks on the The New York Times Best Seller list. I loved this movie and it really made me reflect on my childhood.  The film takes place in the early 1960's but some things hadn't changed even in the 1990's in the Deep South.  This is when I was partially raised until I was around 7 years old by two African American maids, Emma & Gloria.

My family treated them very well but they did wear uniforms and rode the bus to work.  I asked my Mother not too long ago (before I ever heard about the book or movie) what happened to Emma & Gloria and why did she make them wear uniforms? Just like the movie my Mother told me they just quit one day without any explanation and that they preferred to wear uniforms.

I know my parents treated them very well but maybe they left because of my brother. He was a little monster who threatened to have them fired if they didn't serve him ice cream for dinner when my parents were out.  He would throw water balloons down the laundry chute and hit them on the head.  Maybe it was something I did that I can't even write about because it's too embarrassing.

I still remember loving Emma & Gloria and how much I missed them when they were gone.  They were a part of our family and I wish they knew how much I appreciate them now.

During his interview on the red carpet, Freida explained that she was a big fan of how the film portrayed her monkey co-stars.

"I think this is one of the few films that really gives them a voice too. Of course, " Planet of the Apes "did so well, but" Rise of the Planet of the Apes "gives them a voice in a very revolutionary way. "

Soul Surfer ~ Official Trailer

This is the movie I'm watching right now. I couldn't wait until it came to Kuwait so I could see it. What an inspirational story about following your dreams and never giving up. I highly recommend this film but grab your tissue girls. ;)

I love vacationing in Hawaii and watching the North Shore surfers in winter. One of my favorite memories is driving a convertible Ford Mustang (rented) from Wakiki beach to the North Shore with my Dad to watch the surfers ride the big waves.

The Devils Double - Official Movie Trailer

A chilling vision of the House of Saddam Hussein comes to life through the eyes of the man who was forced to become the double of Hussein's sadistic son.

I saw this movie trailer on my buddy's blog, BananaQ8 and I had to post it here. It looks pretty interesting and it's based on a true story.  I can't wait to see it on DVD since you know it will not show here in Kuwait.

Thanks Taz :*

Taz's double ;)

L for Love

A little humor to start off your day at work.

This part in the movie Dodgeball is hilarious.  Gordon thinks his mail ordered bride is telling him L for Love instead of L for Loser.  Loooool.

Good morning Kuwait! Muwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! :********************

Modern Day Cinderella

Whenever something bad happens in your life it's important to have your friends and loved ones around you for support. This is when you find out who is truly there for you no matter what. I'm very fortunate because I came to Kuwait alone and my family lives in the USA. I've managed to make friends with a lovely group of girls that are my Kuwait family. We are always there for each other during the good times and the bad. Girls night out, shopping, coffee shops, the seaside, weekend getaways, financial stress, illness, falling in love, broken hearts, feeling homesick and missing our families.

Having a man in your life that adores you is always a bonus. Someone who makes you feel like a Princess when you just came home from work where a sandstorm kicked your ass. You have sand in everything from your windblown, long, blonde hair to your new, pink, Victoria Secret panties. It's wonderful to have a man who cherishes you and is willing to take care of you in every way.

I feel in the year 2010 women should be able to take care of themselves. I'm not talking about total equality or women paying on dates. There is nothing more attractive than a gentleman. What I mean is that when the guy of your dreams offers to support you financially (car, house, etc.) unless he is your husband you shouldn’t accept but learn to stand on your own two feet. It's always nice to receive a genuine offer from someone you really care about but a modern day Cinderella should always take care of herself. Of course, romantic gifts, dinners and travel is certainly okay in my book ;P

Having a man love you for your physical appearance, intelligence, personality and sense of humor is wonderful but taking care of yourself will win his respect and give you a sense of pride.

Ever After is one of my favorite Drew Barrymore Movies.  When I was a young girl I saw the film in NYC.  After the movie ended everyone stood and clapped in the theater.  If you haven't seen it I highly recommend that you do.

SALT ~ I LOVED the Movie!

I couldn't wait to see SALT and I finally found a copy. I didn't want to see it at the Kuwait Movie Theater because of all the cuts. It took me all day to watch it since I’m busy packing up my enormous amount of stuff that I’ve accumulated in Kuwait. I baked chocolate chip cookies so I could eat them with a cold glass of milk while watching the movie. I needed something to look forward to after being stuck in the house all day going through mountains of shoes, clothes and accessories.

I'm a HUGE fan of the lovely and super talented Angelina Jolie. I've watched her ever since 'Gia' and most of her films are fantastic. She is such a badass in this movie!

Angelina has blonde and brunette hair in SALT and she is stunning with both colors. Without a touch of plastic surgery she is drop dead gorgeous. She is one of the best American actresses of all time and she is my favorite female, action star.

Salt is action packed and I liked the flash backs on how she met and fell in love with her German husband. I kept hearing about the 'terrible ending' on other blogs but I liked how they did it.

*Spoiler Alert* After she saves the world only one CIA agent believes she is innocent. He sets her free so that she can kill the remaining double agents loyal to Russia which leaves the door wide open for SALT 2.

Technology used for Kuwaiti Wedding … why not?

Arab Times July 6, 2010

In a very strange move, a Kuwaiti bridegroom reportedly placed a K-net machine beside him during a wedding to receive presents in cash from his friends and relatives, reports Al-Shahed daily.

According to tradition friends and relatives offer presents in cash on the wedding day. However, it looks like the newly married man wanted to receive money through technology.

Some friends and relatives who went to wish the bridegroom used the machine to offer gifts in cash to the amazement of some onlookers.
