It's Always a Healthy Bite from Edible Arrangements in Kuwait
I can't say enough good things about Edible Arrangements in Kuwait. I just love receiving fruit bouquets from their amazing store. I wasn't crazy about their kiwi or mango this time. Some of the mango wasn't ripe enough and the kiwi tasted too bitter. Everything else was delicious and I adore their strawberries.
I recommend my favorite which is their pineapple, grapes and chocolate dipped strawberries bouquet. The mixed dipped strawberries in a box are really nice as well. Check out their Ramadan specials ~ Yummy!
Dasman Diabetes Institute in Kuwait Organized a Girgea'an Event for its Diabetic Youth
On the occasion of this holy month of Ramadan, Dasman Diabetes Institute of Kuwait organized a Girgean event for its type 1 diabetic youth, on 14th August 2011. This event consisted of various segments including both educational and recreational activities. The patients received complementary educational and nutritional counseling, as well as joining in numerous games and activities, winning prizes and spreading their contagious smiles.
The concept and main focus of this event was to promote and enhance the experience of Ramadan instead of the traditional emphasis of foods and sweets.
Many diabetic children and their families joined this event and benefited greatly from it. You can visit their website and look at pictures of the event here: Dasman Institute Website.
Thank you Dari. ;)
5 Diet Myths and What You Can Learn from Them
I found this interesting article for my sweetheart and thought I would share it with my readers. It seems like a lot of bloggers and my friends are on diets. I really enjoy reading about fellow bloggers 'cheat meals' or food fantasies. Fahad and Mark are some of my favorites! Of course nothing beats Just Noon and her delicious food posts. Let's not forget that Cheeky Knickers is sugar free! (All bloggers mentioned are in my Friendly Fire picks.)
5 Diet Myths and What You Can Learn from Them
By Michelle May, M.D.
Diets are filled with rules about when, what, and how much to eat. While “the rules” may make sense on the surface, unless you understand why you do certain things, you’ll break the rules as soon as the temptation is greater than your motivation.
Let’s examine some of these myths, where they come from, and how to make long term changes that work for you.
Myth 1: Don’t Eat After 7pm
Your metabolism doesn’t shut off at 7:01 pm so why is this rule so common? Many people who struggle with their weight overeat in the evening after dinner so they aren’t snacking because they’re hungry. They’re snacking because they’re bored, watching television, rewarding themselves, or feeling lonely.
Rather than using a temporary rule to address those habits, when you feel like eating in the evenings, ask, “Am I hungry?” If you’re truly hungry, eat, keeping in mind that your day is winding down so you don’t need a big meal. If you aren’t hungry, think about why you feel like eating anyway and come up with a better way to address that need. Ken, a man in one of our Am I Hungry? Mindful Eating workshops, realized he was just bored so he started doing stained glass to entertain himself while he watched TV.
Myth 2: Eat Small Meals Every 3 Hours
This rule is based on the fact that many people who don’t struggle with weight issues tend to eat frequent small meals. However, they don’t check their watch to tell them when it’s time to eat; they eat when they’re hungry and stop when they’re satisfied. Since that tends to be a small-ish meal, they get hungry again in a few hours.
Instead of watching the clock, begin to tune in to the physical symptoms of hunger and fullness to tell you when to eat and when to stop. Your stomach is about the size of your fist so it only holds a couple of handfuls of food comfortably. By relearning to trust your body’s signals, you can learn to follow a frequent small meal pattern naturally.
Myth 3: Don’t Let Yourself Get Hungry
A corollary to myth 2, this rule is based on the belief that overweight people are incapable of controlling themselves when they’re hungry. In my experience with thousands of Am I Hungry? Mindful Eating workshop participants, the opposite is true. Once people learn to tell the difference between physical hunger and head hunger, they begin to meet each need more appropriately. Perhaps the rule should be “Don’t let yourself get too hungry” since it’s harder to make conscious choices when you’re starving.
Myth 4: Follow Your Diet Six Days a Week Then You Can Have a Cheat Day
Hmmm…what if you were a harsh, overly strict parent six days a week then completely ignored your kids every Saturday? It doesn’t make sense to try to be perfect Sunday through Friday while obsessing about everything you’re going to eat on your “day off.” Then when Saturday comes, you overeat just because you’re allowed to so you end up feeling miserable all day. Personally, I’d rather enjoy eating a little of the foods I love every day, mindfully and in moderation.
Myth 5: Carbs are Bad… or Fat is Bad… or ______ is Bad
“Good food, bad food” thinking can lead to feelings of deprivation, cravings, overeating, and guilt. All foods can fit into a healthy diet using the principles of balance, variety, and moderation to guide you. Use nutrition information as a tool, not a weapon.
Truth:
A sustainable personal approach trumps short term rules. Rather than walking a tight rope that you’ll fall off of sooner or later, dig a little deeper to better understand why, when, what, how, and how much you eat. You’ll gradually create a more flexible, personalized approach to making decisions that both nourish and nurture you.
Your thoughts....
Did you, or do you, buy in to any of these myths?

Protect Your...
Please read this entire post. It could save your life or a relative.
This week I received the first shot of the three step HPV vaccine. I didn't feel pain or suffer from any side effects. This initial shot cost me 60 KD ($210) which sounds expensive but you can't put a price on saving your own life. I will follow up in one month with my second shot and then in six months to complete the three part series.
It is so important to get your vaccine before you become sexually active or exposed to HPV. Before you get married or start any intimate relationship you should have received all three shots. Your future spouse or partner might carry the HPV (human papillomavirus) disease without even knowing he or she has it. This vaccine could save your life and I want to encourage everyone reading my blog to please talk to your doctor, get informed and consider getting vaccinated. I did it and you can too!
<3 E&TC
Who should get HPV vaccine?
Cervarix and Gardasil vaccines are licensed, safe, and effective for females ages 9 through 26 years. CDC recommends that all girls who are 11 or 12 years old get the 3 doses (shots) of either brand of HPV vaccine to protect against cervical cancer and precancer. Gardasil also protects against most genital warts. Girls and young women ages 13 through 26 should get all 3 doses of an HPV vaccine if they have not received all doses yet.
Gardasil is also licensed, safe, and effective for males ages 9 through 26 years. Boys and young men may choose to get this vaccine to prevent genital warts. People who have already had sexual contact before getting all 3 doses of an HPV vaccine might still benefit if they were not infected before vaccination with the HPV types included in the vaccine they received. The best way to be sure that a person gets the most benefit from HPV vaccination is to complete all three doses before sexual activity begins.
Why are HPV vaccines needed?
HPV vaccines prevent serious health problems, such as cervical cancer and other, less common cancers, which are caused by HPV (human papillomavirus). In addition to cancer, HPV can also cause other health problems, such as genital warts. HPV is a common virus that is easily spread by skin-to-skin contact during sexual activity with another person. It is possible to have HPV without knowing it, so it is possible to unknowingly spread HPV to another person. Safe, effective vaccines are available to protect females and males against some of the most common types of HPV and the health problems that the virus can cause.
Are the HPV vaccines safe and effective?
FDA has licensed the vaccines as safe and effective. Both vaccines were tested in thousands of people around the world. These studies showed no serious side effects. Common, mild side effects included pain where the shot was given, fever, headache, and nausea. As with all vaccines, CDC and FDA continue to monitor the safety of these vaccines very carefully.

The Joy of Swimming
This morning I woke up very early to beautiful Kuwait weather. After enjoying my morning coffee with a light breakfast I took a quick shower and slipped into my most comfortable swimsuit that Mom sent me. I grabbed the essentials: sunglasses, cover-up, sandals, cell phone, travel pillow, two towels, iPod, girlie mags, suntan lotion, my favorite hat and a small ice chest with water and mini icepack.
When I arrived at my swimming pool the water was clean and the pool area was completely empty. I was hoping that it would be since most residents are either sleeping or at work. I timed myself for a thirty minute intense workout swimming laps. My reward was to spend the rest of the morning playing in the pool and reading while I lay out in the warm sun.
This early morning swim helped relieved my stress, started my day with a good source of cardio and gave me a healthy dose of vitamin D.
The best part of my swim was there was no sign of Billy Bob. :D
What Are the Benefits of Swimming for Women?
A body of water provides multiple avenues for exercise--swimming, walking, aerobics and resistance training are all examples of water routines that build strength and burn calories while providing women with an effective workout. Swimming is a full-body exercise that utilizes, strengthens and tones major muscle groups within a woman's body.
Builds Cardiovascular Endurance
Swimming places high demand on the heart and the lungs, improving and strengthening cardiovascular functioning. Strong lungs improve oxygen transport to the cells and muscles throughout a woman's body. The more efficient and effective the lungs become, the easier breathing becomes during swimming and other modes of exercise. Increasing cardiovascular endurance contributes to higher calorie expenditure and increases in exercise duration and intensity. Swimming strengthens a woman's heart, helping lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels while lowering the risk of stroke and heart disease.
Provides Low-Impact Exercise
According to the Bucknell University Athletic Department, the body is 90 percent buoyant when submerged in water. For example, when a woman jogs in the pool, only 10 percent of her body weight is experiencing impact. Swimming protects the joints from high-impact movements, such as pounding and bouncing, that are common during running or other land activities. Swimming is a smart exercise choice for women with osteoporosis, a disease that renders bones brittle and weak. According to the National Women's Health Information Center, women are more susceptible to osteoporosis than men. Water activities provide a low-impact workout for women who have weak bones and joints without compromising their health.
Challenges the Muscles
The Bucknell University Athletic Department reports that exercising in water provides the body with 12 percent to 14 percent more resistance than when exercising on land. As a result, a woman burns a high number of calories while she is exercising in the water and she is constantly using her leg and arm muscles to propel her forward. In conjunction with the two weekly strength training sessions recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine, swimming builds muscle tone, strength and endurance in the core, upper and lower body. Additionally, consistent water resistance protects the muscles from sudden quick or jerky movements often associated with injury during a workout.
Eases Exercise Difficulties During Pregnancy
Since women are mostly buoyant while swimming, pregnant women may be more comfortable exercising in water than on land. Improvements in muscular strength and oxygen efficiency may ease the challenges of labor and will help a woman's lungs deliver oxygen effectively to her baby. Swimming may lower stress levels and anxiety experienced during pregnancy. The Baby Center reports that swimming may help women sleep better and empower women to deal with psychological and physical challenges associated with pregnancy.

Can I Live a Healthy Lifestyle in Kuwait?
Yes, I can if I chose to do so.
If you read my blog you know that I don't have the best eating habits in the world. I spend a lot of time at my job and I do not have a regular exercise routine. My biggest excuse for not eating healthy is my lack of time to cook in Kuwait. I go out to eat a lot at night and lunch at work usually consists of fast food or coffee with no lunch at all. I don't need to lose weight but what I do need is to feel more energized and healthy. This junk food is making me feel tired and irritable. I saw a documentary on television about the negative effects of fast food and I can't get it out of my mind. The products most of these companies use are disgusting and not even meant for human consumption. Kuwait has become a fast food hub for all of the unhealthy, American restaurants from back home. A few people are getting rich by helping Kuwait become obese and diabetic. I know that each individual is responsible for their own food choices but anyone in Kuwait can look around and see how all of these unhealthy, American restaurants are influencing the dietary choices of Kuwait.
With my busy schedule I'm taking baby steps to achieve my fitness and health goals. I'm pretty happy with my body but I know that what I do now will affect me when I get older. I am researching the Internet on simple ways to improve my health and well being. I am also giving myself the freedom to cheat from time to time so that I do not get discouraged and quit.
10 Ways to Improve Your Health in 1 Minute or Less
We worry about big health issues like heart problems or cancer, but sometimes it seems like our efforts to prevent them are few and far between. Fear not – there are simple and quick things you can do keep yourself feeling healthy and relaxed.
#1 - Kick Start Your Day with Flowers
While daily routines can deflate our energy level and outlook on life before the weekend even arrives, research shows that relief is as close as the nearest florist, or grocery store. According to a recent study at Rutgers University, flowers promote long-term, positive effects on our energy and mood, and can even reduce depression and anxiety.
#2 - Get Cozy with Your Man / Woman ~ ;P
New research suggests getting cozy with your man or woman will earn you more than just brownie points. Anything from a quick snuggle, to getting busy between the sheets will do the trick, a recent study in Psychosomatic Medicine suggests. For every cuddly minute, cortisol, the hormone our body releases in response to stress, is reduced by seven percent. So go ahead and get close, it does your body good.
#3 - Eat Dark Chocolate (YES!!!)
Eying up that dark chocolate bar in your kitchen pantry? No guilt needed, according to a recent study at Northumbria University in Britain. Full of flavanols, which help to increase blood flow to the brain, and flavonoids, which help our body repair damage and fight toxins, chocolate can improve memory, fight fatigue, and aid the body in mentally challenging tasks.
#4 - Turn Up the Tunes :D
Next time you find yourself crawling the walls in a stressful situation, slip on your headphones and turn up the tunes. According to a recent study at Cleveland Clinic, music can slow the neuronal firings deep within the brain, lowering your blood pressure and stress level.
# 5 - Have a Laugh
When it comes to stress, laughter really is the best medicine. Shown to boost our energy level, reduce pain, improve immune function, and relieve tension, giggly behavior is the perfect anecdote. “Get a silly screen saver. Rent a funny movie when you get home. Stop taking things so seriously!” says Alice Domar, Ph.D., director of the Mind/Body Center for Women's Health at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
# 6 - Take a Brisk Walk with your Pooch
Man’s best friend is more than just a companion these days. Taking a quick romp around the block is a great way to give your legs a little exercise, and also elevate your levels of serotonin and dopamine, the nerve transmitters that have pleasurable and calming properties, says Blair Justice, PhD, a psychology professor at the University of Texas School of Public Health.
# 7 - Take a Deep Breath
Who knew improving our health and happiness is just a breath away? From better digestion, fitness, and mental health to improved energy and relaxation, deep breathing goes hand-in-hand with a healthy lifestyle. So go ahead, breathe in…and exhale…
# 8 - An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away
These nutrient rich fruits are a major asset to any diet, and pack quite a punch in the health department. Full of antioxidants, fiber, and flavonoids, apples help to support a healthy heart, and keep your LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels under control.
# 9 - Enjoy a Glass of Wine ~ Homemade if your in Kuwait ;P
Looking for an excuse to tip back some chardonnay? According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, one glass of wine daily can increase the amount of omega-3 fatty acids in our blood, aiding our body against inflammation and improving the health of our arteries. Cheers to that!
# 10 - Show Me Your Pearly Whites
There’s nothing quite like a smile to light up a room, and fight stress, according to a recent study at Columbia University. When you feel your nerves tighten and the grip of anxiety upon you, take a second and smile, “if you can slow your breathing down and change your expression, you may be able to turn around the stress cascade,” explains Mark Stibich, PhD, a consultant at Columbia University.

I'm Going Bananas
One of the girls sent me an email today on the nutritional benefits of eating bananas. I wanted to share it with you because that's what I do. You can usually catch me eating a banana on the way to work or enjoying a slice of heaven: Ms. Ida's homemade, banana nut bread with melted butter and a glass of ice cold milk.
Who would have thought that the horned shaped, delicious fruit we know as a banana, is one of mother natures most helpful, energizing, and healing fruits that she ever created! Bananas are miracle fruits, due to the sheer amount of diseases and conditions they help fight and prevent, and two bananas a day should be included in your diet if you want to reap the rewards of such a powerful fruit.
Bananas contain three naturally occurring sugars, which we know as fructose, glucose, and sucrose. Couple that with the fiber content in a banana, it's no wonder that professional athletes and regular every day people eat bananas pre-workout, post workout, and everywhere in between. It's also a great snack for the kids before, during, and after school.
But as we talked about earlier, the banana has an array of disease and condition fighting powerhouse nutrients - so here are some of the benefits of eating bananas for your health:
Great for blood pressure - Since the banana is high in potassium and low in sodium, it makes a perfect natural defense for high blood pressure. As a matter of fact, the USDA recently allowed the banana industry to make claims of the fruits ability to prevent high blood pressure and even stroke symptoms.
Food For Thought - There have been multiple education based studies that show eating bananas before school, at lunch, breaks, and at lunch, improve test scores overall performance by measurable results. The potassium blast helps to naturally energize the brain and makes students more alert and receptive.
Backed Up? As you may or may not know, bananas are jam packed with colon cleansing fiber. This helps promote and restore regular bowel movements, and is a safe, natural alternative to laxatives. Eating a banana a day makes for good toilet time.
Got The Blues? Many studies and research have proven that eating bananas can take the edge off depression, due to the fact that they contain Tryptophan, which is a type of protein that gets converted in the body to Serotonin. Serotonin helps you relax, makes you feel happy, and generally improves your mood.
Got the Burn? Since they have a naturally occurring antacid effect in the body, bananas help get rid of heart burn after eating your favorite (but miserable) foods. So after you chow down that pepperoni pizza, make sure to have a banana for dessert to keep your stomach a happy camper.
That Time Of The Month? Get rid of the Midol, and turn to Mother Nature's solution for PMS - the banana! Bananas contain vitamin B6 which helps regulate blood sugar levels, which, in turn, can have a positive effect on your mood.
Kick The Habit - Bananas have been shown to help smokers kick their habits because the vitamin B12 and B6 they contain, along with the potassium and magnesium, helps in recovering from the effects of nicotine withdrawal (which can be a very unpleasant feeling - trust me, I know!)
So remember when someone says, "an apple a day keeps the doctor away", you can politely add in that a banana a day has about four times the effect! Bananas are definitely one of nature's super fruits, and you should be eating them regularly. Your mind, heart, and colon will thank you.
Shocking! :(
Outsourcing pregnancy to India? This is just the beginning
There are several scenes that catch viewers by surprise in HBO’s new documentary film, "Google Baby": The exact moment an Indian surrogate mother sees the child she has held in her body for months, and is told not to cry by the doctor performing a Caesarian-section; The tired afternoon in which a 28-year-old American mom plugs in her big-screen television, and explains that she donates her eggs to afford her lifestyle; The telephone conversation in which an Israeli businessman sells a childless couple on the idea of impregnating more than one surrogate to have a better chance a viable pregnancy, and then hangs up to wonder out loud about what he has done.
Following the new big business of unregulated, international surrogacy, “Google Baby” goes to places both familiar and foreign, tracing the strange supply and demand of baby production. If those words sound cold, consider that many of the parents applying for international surrogates are desperate for their own children, and see this as their only affordable means. Consider also that this desperation has resulted in a worldwide market, where sperm and eggs from various donors (American, European, Asian) are implanted into women in India, with parents arriving to pick up their newborns some 10 months later.
Shine spoke with director Zippi Brand Frank about her complicated, disturbing documentary.
When did you first hear about this process? Is it relatively new or something that has been going on for years?
This is a relatively new process. About three years ago, Dr. Nayna Patel was the first to offer surrogacy service from India. In the beginning of the filming process she had 70 surrogates, she now has about 300.
How long were you filming?
The whole process took three years. We took two trips to the US, three trips to India and filmed in Israel.
How many surrogate clinics exist in India today?
There are many Indian doctors who have imitated Dr. Patel and now offer surrogacy to Western clients. I was surprised that Dr. Patel, who runs the clinic and ostensibly profits from the surrogates was also the one performing the C-section. Did you think this was a conflict of interest? Did she strike you as genuinely concerned for the health of her surrogates?
Dr. Patel is a very good doctor and yes, she is a one-woman show. She does everything. No, it is not a conflict of interest because it is her business. She’s taking care of her name. She takes very good care of her surrogates and is a very experienced doctor. In my opinion, her clinic is up to Western standards.
In the movie, surrogates seem enthusiastic about the idea of being able to buy homes, or send their own kids to school with the money they will make, and yet in the birth scenes, they seem visibly upset. Did all of the surrogates you filmed with feel sadness when their babies were taken?
It’s not easy to be separated from a baby and more and more the surrogates are touched by these babies but they’ve known all along that they will be detached. The surrogates are looking forward to buying themselves a house and having a chance to educate their children with the money they earn.
In one scene, Doron [an Israeli entrepreneur who decides to go into business as a surrogacy intermediary after having his own child] is seen selling a prospective parent on the idea of impregnating two surrogates at once to increase the odds of a viable pregnancy. Afterward, he admits something about this makes him uncomfortable. Did he ever figure out what that was?
For Doron, in this scene, it was the first time he actually faced the moral side of his job. Before then he was naïve. Whenever I asked him questions he answered quite naively. He was facing all of these moral questions and since then they have increased.
It was a true moment for him not knowing what bothered him because before, in my opinion, he was too naïve. When he used a surrogate himself, he was in touch with the mother and invited her to his country. At that moment in the film, he understood that couples and customers prefer to have long distance relationships, if at all with the surrogate. Now he understands it’s much more of a business.
One of the saddest sidebars in this film is the role that men play. From the Indian husband who maintains that his wife's brain isn’t as good as a man’s, to the silent, unresponsive husband of the American egg donor, these men seem to be profiting from the women in their lives without giving them thanks or even respect.
Did you find that to be true throughout your filming, or do you think this was about the specific couples involved?
Most of the American egg donors I spoke to were single so I cannot comment on the men in their lives. There is something in what you are saying about the Indian men not being thankful enough for the Indian women doing this. I think that’s something Dr. Patel realizes and she’s trying to protect these women by putting the money they earn into a separate bank account under their name or buying a house in the woman’s name.
How do you, personally, feel about outsourced surrogacy now that you have seen the details of the business? Do you think that parents getting the children they so desperately want makes this process a viable one? Is it, as Dr. Patel says, “one woman helping another”?
I can understand those who see the outsourcing of surrogacy to India, for a fraction of the price of western surrogates, as exploitation. However, after having spent considerable time in India, I am more inclined to accept Dr. Patel’s point of view and her feminist agenda as she perceives it. Dr. Patel believes that for these rural women in India, surrogacy is almost the only way to make a life-changing move. They are transforming their lives and the lives of their families and children by making education and/or housing a viable option. I endeavored to keep any personal judgment on my part out of the movie. People tend to have strong opinions on these issues, and what is perceived as salvation to some, is viewed as diabolic by others.
What do you see as the future of international surrogacy?
The situation will become even more complicated, as I believe that in the future, surrogacy will not only be used as a last resort but rather as an alternative for women who do not wish to have stretch marks or might not want to be pregnant because of their careers. I believe the business aspects of the reproduction industry are intriguing as well as frightening. With an absence of moral rules or ethics, the global economy is exploited to its full measure. Thus, with no existing legal barriers to overcome and lots of money to be made, the human reproduction industry is steaming ahead. A cold and distant business reality guided only by the principles of the free market dealing with the most sensitive of issues. I tried through Google Baby to provide a glimpse of what I believe is likely to become a major concern for humanity in the future.

"Google Baby" will re-air on June 19th at 7:45am and June 22nd at 8 am and is available on HBO On Demand. Just select Documentaries, Feature Films.
