New Policy Aims at Preventing Kuwaitis from Marrying Foreigners

Panel eyes higher grants to overcome dowries problem

Arab Times, Kuwait City, Nov 14, 2010: In an attempt to discourage Kuwaitis from marrying foreigners and other Arabs abroad, the Committee for Limiting Kuwaiti Marriages Abroad has drafted a new policy whereby such marriages will be certified only if the Kuwaiti is 21 years of age or older, reports Al-Qabas daily.

Informed sources said the committee, which was formed by justice minister, is planning to submit a comprehensive report to the Cabinet suggesting Kuwaitis who marry their compatriots within the country be granted higher grants in order to overcome the problem of high dowries.

Sources said the committee will coordinate with neighboring countries to benefit from their experiences in this regard. The committee is also against the extending of minimum marriageable age limit for girls in the country and wants to curb the phenomenon of ‘Kuwaiti-foreigner marriages.’ Sources say representatives of the ministries of Justice, Interior and Foreign Affairs will hold a meeting this month to discuss some important proposals in this regard.

If you fell in love and wanted to marry a foreigner would this stop you?
