Happy Thanksgiving from Kuwait

Native American Girl

Thursday will be Thanksgiving and I want to wish everyone a very happy Thanksgiving 2010.  I am homesick for my family in the United States as I spend this popular American holiday in Kuwait.  This year my families Thanksgiving will be held at my parent's house on the river.  Everyone will be there except for me.  For us it's all about family, friends, food and giving thanks to God for our many blessings in this life.

Our traditional Thanksgiving dinner usually consists of turkey, stuffing, honey baked ham *oink oink*, gravy, mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, mushroom rice, strawberry and walnut salad, with hot rolls and butter.  For dessert we usually have carrot cake, chocolate cake and pecan pie with vanilla ice cream.   We usually serve Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Merlot, Marie's gingerbread martinis, iced tea and water for our drinks.  Dessert will be served with coffee from New Orleans Cafe Du Monde.

Before we eat my entire family and friends will hold hands and pray together.  To thank God for the food we are about to eat.  My Father usually says the blessing and my brother always kicks me from under the table.  He is 6'5 so his long legs can reach me from anywhere.  Over the years he has never managed to kick anyone else to my amazement.  He has a real talent in the kicking department.

What is Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving Day, currently celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, has been an annual tradition in the United States since 1863. Thanksgiving was historically a religious observation to give thanks to God.

The event that Americans commonly call the first Thanksgiving was celebrated to give thanks to God for helping the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony survive their first brutal winter in New England. The first Thanksgiving feast lasted three days providing enough food for 53 pilgrims and 90 Native Americans. The feast consisted of fowl, venison, fish, lobster, clams, berries, fruit, pumpkin, squash and turkey.
