Yesterday I was driving home from work and found myself in the middle of a parade of Kuwaiti men in cars celebrating what I believe was a wedding party. I had just hung up the phone after talking to my friend,
the “Shy Guy" when I took a turn on a side street close to my building. I was blocked by all the oncoming traffic and couldn't move my car. Then this Kuwaiti guy jumps out of his SUV and starts shooting in the air directly in front of my car. It scared me to death and the bullet cases came very close to hitting the hood of my car. I didn't know what was happening at first and I sort of panicked. I just froze and didn't move. I wasn't impressed with how I handled the situation. I went into shock at first because I thought he was going to shoot at me.
He quickly jumped back into his SUV and all I could do was call my friend back and tell him what happened. He explained that this was illegal in Kuwait but some Kuwaitis still do it. Just hearing his voice calmed me down enough to ignore all the guys following the shooter who were shouting and blowing their horns. I just drove home like nothing happened.
You just never know what will happen when you live in Kuwait. That is exactly why I love living here.
